Rescues

We hope you enjoy our "family" album featuring our favorite photos of rehabilitated orphaned, injured, or abused animals. Most of the animals you see on the website were rescued by OWRC.
Note: Rabies vector species animals (raccoons, foxes, skunks, and bats) should only be handled by certified RVS wildlife rehabilitators. Please use caution when approaching any injured wildlife. Call the Department of Natural Resources for licensed wildlife rehabilitators in your area.

OWRC's Rescue Vessels

OWRC and the Wildlife Clinic of Maryland, Inc. (TWCM) own and operate two rescue vessels. Rescue I (left), a 24' Mako and Rescue II, a 16' Glastron, are used to rescue injured or orphaned animals on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States.

OWRC’s rescues typically include ospreys, bald eagles, sea turtles, diamond-backed terrapins, sea birds, pelicans, numerous waterfowl, and the occasional wayward manatee or porpoise.

Matt Gambrill, the owner of Calvert Marina, has generously donated two slips at the charter fishing dock that are home to Rescue I and
Rescue II. Already at the marina are two wildlife holding pens and a waterfowl release pen.

OWRC and TWCM rescue and save more than 1600 animals annually, have twelve licensed veterinarians, fourteen licensed wildlife rehabilitators, and currently have a core of about thirty-five volunteers overall.

If you are interested in becoming a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in the state of Maryland, please contact the Department of Natural Resources at 410-260-8546 and request a wildlife rehabilitation internship application. There are a number of wildlife rehabilitation facilities in the state of Maryland, including OWRC, that will sponsor and train you. The program requires a substantial commitment in time and includes some financial responsibilities to properly house, feed, and maintain animals.

For information on how to become a member of our on-water rescue team, please email “Doc” Wexler at info@orphaned-wildlife-rescue-center.com.

OWRC and TWCM depend on the community’s financial support to keep their rescue and research vessels in service. If you would like to make a secure, tax-deductible online donation, please click on the links below.

OWRC Mission

Founded in 1990, the Orphaned Wildlife Rescue Center's mission is to provide assistance to private citizens with wildlife emergencies; to rescue and rehabilitate wildlife, with the goal of release back to nature; to promote the general health and welfare of the citizens of Maryland; and to provide children with educational opportunities to foster a respect for our natural world and for themselves.

Orphaned Wildlife Rescue Center (OWRC) is an all-volunteer network of State and Federally licensed wildlife rehabilitators, veterinarians, transporters, and other skilled individuals dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife to include birds, small mammals, sea turtles, osprey, hawks, eagles, and reptiles. Our veterinarians and wildlife rehabilitators bring with them many years of experience about individualized animal care.

Each year, our volunteers rescue over 1,600 animals, provide them with expert medical care, and give them the very best chance of survival.
