Summer Internships and Independent Studies Programs for Credit

Facility:

OWRC is located on the Chesapeake Bay, 45 minutes south of Washington, DC. We are a small facility specializing in the rescue, treatment, and rehabilitation of more than 1,000 animals each year. OWRC privately owns and operates the only wildlife rescue and research vessels on the Chesapeake Bay. Common rescues include raccoons, sea turtles, waterfowl, owls, eagles, hawks, ospreys, opossums, rabbits, and fawns.  The facility houses a basic emergency room, operating room, nursery, lab, and kennels, which are technically supported by twelve local veterinary hospitals and five consulting veterinarians. OWRC is licensed in all species, and is primarily a Wildlife Rescue Center.

Opportunities:

Spring and summer interns are involved in all phases of wildlife rescue, treatment, and rehabilitation. Training is provided by wildlife specialists and veterinarians. Training will include animal handling and restraint, preliminary physical exams and diagnosis, basic surgical procedures and x-ray techniques. A valid driver’s license and transportation are required. Most colleges and universities offer between eight and twelve credit hours per summer session in either independent studies or internship programs.

Qualifications:

Internships are available to students who are majoring in degree programs for Veterinary Medicine, Animal and Wildlife Sciences, and Biology. Internships in Public Relations and Radio-TV-Film are also available. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for all interns. A letter of reference from your professor, administrator or department supervisor from your major area of study is required. A current resume must accompany your application. Mail or fax your application to OWRC before stated deadlines.

Programs:

Most internships and independent studies programs are from twelve to sixteen weeks, 30-35 hours per week, and should be coordinated with your school schedules. OWRC’s primary training programs are May through August annually. Summer sessions are highly competitive.

Comments:

Application deadlines are thirty days prior to each session and are due before April 15. Early applicants are given priority. It is the student’s responsibility to coordinate all credits and schedules with their advisors prior to application.

Scholarships and stipends:

$500 to $1500 scholarships or stipends are available for summer interns. Some on-site housing may also be available. Other grants may be available. OWRC offers four to five internships every summer.
